FOCUS
A state-of-the-art Distance Learning Classroom was opened at Prairie View A&M on July 1, 1997. The Laboratory utilizes a VTel Media Max System that was provided by the University. Port B of this video conferencing equipment is used to attach to the video segment of the Texas VidNet Network. The other port maintains a direct connection to the Trans Texas Video Network (TTVN). Our network has been designated The North Star Telecommunications Network. It has both Video and Data capabilities as well as access to satellite transmissions and the University Campus Cable System. This network has the capability to be expanded to include voice communications.

A forty-two station NRTS computer training laboratory was constructed in 1996. The NRTS Training Laboratory has subsequently been upgraded to include full video conferencing capability through a Vtel MediaMax System. It is now possible to broadcast all training sessions to any national NRTS site. The laboratory was designed and constructed by the Construction Division of the PVAMU NRTS. The VC Wizard conference control software has been upgraded and used to set-up multi-point conferences utilizing the Madge 200 Switch. This switch currently houses an eight-port MCU. It is a goal to regularly conduct multi-point conferences among all NRTS sites. The PVAMU staff are currently working to assist the other six national sites in design and installation of appropriate hardware.

The PVAMU NRTS staff has been involved in the design, construction, and installation of Distance Learning Classrooms at the Drew Middle School (Aldine Independent School District), Texas Southern University, TADC Headquarters in Dallas, Texas, and the Cooperative Agriculture Research Center (CARC) at Prairie View A&M University. The experience from these projects has created a wealth of expertise which will be shared with other MUSPIN eligible institutions during the coming year. There are alternatives to the perceived high cost of development of Distance Learning Classrooms.
